Time to extinguish the exotic flame: Lessons from the 2021 Cape Town fire

Forty-two taxa were assessed for fresh- and dry-leaf ignitibility and sustainability plus combustibility. Twenty leaves were collected from each of five biological replicates per taxon; ten leaves were used for fresh tests and ten for dry tests after trait measurement.

Laboratory means were recomputed from the official UCT raw-data workbook. Published Table 1 supplies identities and 2021 burn observations where the deposited workbook uses shorthand or contains typographical discrepancies. Native/exotic group differences are not converted into species verdicts. The abstract and methods state 22 native and 20 exotic taxa, while the published Table 1 labels and deposited workbook count 23 native and 19 exotic; the row-level labels are preserved without resolving that conflict. Phoenix canariensis and Pinus pinea receive avoid evidence only because the authors explicitly describe the former as a great danger during fire events and the latter as a wildfire hazard.
