Test method for whether an exterior vent resists ember entry and direct flame impingement.

You are looking at a hole in the envelope. Hardware-store mesh is a size rule. E2886 is a lab run of a built assembly in one orientation. Homeowners rarely type this number. They type “ember-resistant vents.” This page exists so those two paths stay distinct. See mesh versus listed vents and compare vents.
Why it matters
Embers enter at vents. A pass on this method is evidence that that specimen, as built for the test, resisted ember entry and flame in the apparatus. It is not a stamp for every hole on the house. A listed gable vent is not automatically legal on an eave. Mesh is not a failed E2886 test. It is a different path.
How the test works
The method asks whether embers and flame get through a vent assembly in a lab apparatus. Read the listing for orientation (gable, soffit, foundation, undereave). Some roof-vent geometries do not fit the apparatus. Makers sometimes say that in writing. Absence from an E2886 list is then a test-scope fact, not proof of failure.
What it is not
It is not 1/8 inch mesh.
It is not an OSFM listing. Listing is a separate program that often uses this test.
It is not a permit. California CWUIC, Oregon R327 where adopted, and your building official still sit on top.
What people mix up
Treating “E2886” on a brochure as a listing ID.
Using a listed gable model on an eave because the brand matches.
Calling mesh illegal because it has no E2886 page.
How to use it here
On a product page we cite E2886 only when a listing body or the standard itself is in the source list. Manufacturer “E2886 approved” copy is not enough. Confirm the live GOVmotus record. Search the BML for the listing ID. That URL is a search box, not a permalink.
Limits

Is ASTM E2886 the same as 1/8 inch mesh?
No. Mesh size is a prescriptive path. E2886 is a performance test of an assembly.
Does a pass mean I can install it anywhere?
No. A pass means the specimen met the method. OSFM listing, adopted code, and the building official are separate steps.
What is E2912?
Related flame-intrusion work used with E2886. Listing text often names both. Read the listing, not a brochure paraphrase.
