Databases do not agree which genus holds Monterey cypress and Arizona cypress. GBIF’s backbone accepts Cupressus macrocarpa Hartw. ex Gordon and files Hesperocyparis macrocarpa (Hartw. ex Gordon) Bartel as a synonym of that name (Bartel, Phytologia 91(1): 182, 2009). iNaturalist marks Cupressus arizonica inactive and points at one synonymous taxon: Hesperocyparis arizonica. This site stores the source’s letters and joins with ids. It does not mint a second plant.

You are comparing a Firewise PDF that says Cupressus arizonica to an iNaturalist observation tagged Hesperocyparis arizonica, and wondering which page to open. Open Cupressus arizonica var. arizonica. That record’s scientificName is still the source spelling. Its reviewNotes already say iNaturalist lists the taxon under Hesperocyparis arizonica. The photo pipeline’s rule is the same join: if a taxon is inactive, follow current_synonymous_taxon_ids when there is a single target.

This is source-verbatim names applied to taxonomy churn, not to a typo.

Why it matters

If we rewrote every Cupressus row to Hesperocyparis to match iNaturalist, a list that still says Cupressus could miss the join. If we treated the two names as two plants, the same avoid row could vote twice — or vanish from one of them. Ids are the join key. The letters on the evidence row stay.

What people mix up

  • Treating Hesperocyparis as a different landscape plant from Cupressus when the ids join.
  • Rewriting every row to the newest database so old lists cannot match.
  • Counting GBIF’s accepted name and iNaturalist’s active name as two evidence lineages.
  • Putting Mediterranean cypress on the Hesperocyparis page because both are called cypress.
  • Reading the name change as a flammability change.
  • Inventing a third genus (Callitropsis) as the site’s choice. GBIF lists Callitropsis macrocarpa as another synonym of 2684070; this page does not pick a winner among treatments.

No. GBIF backbone species 2684070 accepts Cupressus macrocarpa Hartw. ex Gordon. The same backbone files Hesperocyparis macrocarpa (Hartw. ex Gordon) Bartel, published in Phytologia 91(1): 182 (2009), as a synonym of that species. One record.

Why does iNaturalist say Hesperocyparis arizonica?

iNaturalist taxon 57888 (Cupressus arizonica) is inactive. Its current_synonymous_taxon_ids array is a single target, 1515459, which is the active taxon Hesperocyparis arizonica. The photo pipeline follows that one target. It does not create a second directory page.

Did you rewrite the scientific name to match iNaturalist?

No. Source-verbatim names stay. The Arizona cypress record’s scientificName is still Cupressus arizonica var. arizonica. The Monterey cypress record’s scientificName is still Cupressus macrocarpa. Ids and reviewNotes carry the Hesperocyparis join.

Is Mediterranean cypress in Hesperocyparis too?

Not on the iNaturalist genus we opened. Cupressus (taxon 49292) is active. Its active children include Cupressus sempervirens. Cupressus arizonica is not among those active children; it was transferred.

Does the name change the fire status?

No. Evidence rows stay on the record. Renaming the genus does not average, delete, or mint a rating.
