Western Woods' OSFM WUI listing 8140-2084:0001 sets different flame-spread limits for additional wood species in each siding orientation.
The September 2025 8140-2084:0001 description includes tongue-and-groove, shiplap, Channel Shiplap and V Shiplap in both orientations. Log Cabin belongs to its horizontal option. For wood outside the named species, horizontal installation permits an ASTM E84 flame-spread rating no greater than 150, while the vertical limit is 100; both are labeled Class C. The class label alone therefore misses a consequential difference.
Both orientations offer the same nine named species. The cedars are Western Red Cedar, Port Orford Cedar, Alaska Yellow Cedar and Incense Cedar; the remaining choices are Redwood, Douglas Fir, White Fir, Western Spruce and Ponderosa Pine. Whichever orientation is chosen, boards must be at least nominal 6 inches wide and nominal 1 inch thick, with nominal sizing under DOC PS 20. Edge- and end-glued siding can be used interchangeably with solid-sawn members.
The siding cannot have through holes or loose knots. Beneath it, the description requires structural plywood or OSB of at least 7/16-inch thickness, complying with PS1 or PS2. Its butt-joint recommendation calls for flush, gap-free ends and staggering of at least 12 inches. The same recommended practice calls for nailing joints into studs or blocking, with one nail at each framing-support crossing for nominal 6-inch siding and two for nominal 8-inch-or-wider siding.
Keep the selected profile, orientation and species route together when consulting the industrial technical guide and the manufacturer's installation instructions and product data sheets. These dimensions and practices are from the dated handbook; verify the exact Western Woods entry in GOVmotus before specifying it.
