Western Woods' board-and-batten siding assembly is listed, with defined dimensions and fastening conditions for its boards and battens.
The September 2025 handbook's 8140-2084:0005 listing specifies minimum nominal 8-inch-wide, nominal 1-inch-thick boards and minimum nominal 4-inch-wide, nominal 1-1/4-inch-thick battens. Gaps between boards cannot exceed 1/2 inch. Batten fasteners into the wood frame must be at least 3 inches long and no more than 24 inches apart on center.
Backing is structural plywood or OSB, minimum 7/16-inch thickness, complying with PS1 or PS2. The siding cannot contain through holes or loose knots. Boards and battens may be Alaska Yellow Cedar, Port Orford Cedar, Incense Cedar, Western Red Cedar or Redwood. Other species require flame spread no greater than 75 (Class B) under ASTM E84. Nominal board sizes must comply with DOC PS 20; edge- and end-glued siding is interchangeable with solid-sawn members.
For nominal 8-inch-or-wider siding, OSFM specifies two nails at every wood-frame support crossing. Nail joints into studs or blocking. Its recommended butt-joint practice is different from the permitted board gap: stagger butt joints at least 12 inches and leave them flush, without gaps.
