Western Woods' 2025 siding listing names Channel Shiplap only for vertical installation; its other named profiles allow either orientation.
The September 2025 OSFM listing 8140-2084:0003 permits horizontal tongue-and-groove, shiplap and V Shiplap (Edge Vee One Side). The vertical alternative adds Channel Shiplap. Both specify minimum nominal 4-inch width and nominal 1-inch thickness, with board sizes complying with DOC PS 20.
The wood must have no through holes or loose knots. Structural plywood or OSB backing must be at least 7/16 inch thick and comply with PS1 or PS2. Species options are Redwood, Western Red Cedar, Incense Cedar, Port Orford Cedar and Alaska Yellow Cedar; other species need an ASTM E84 flame-spread rating no greater than 75 (Class B). Edge- and end-glued siding may replace solid-sawn members.
Both orientations require an additional face nail approximately 1 inch from the tongue-and-groove's groove edge or the shiplap's overlapping edge. At each frame-support crossing, the schedule specifies one nail for nominal 6-inch siding and two for nominal 8-inch-or-wider siding. Joints are nailed into studs or blocking. The handbook recommends butt joints staggered at least 12 inches and flush without gaps.
Choose the orientation and profile together, then check the industrial technical guide, manufacturer's installation instructions and product data sheets named by OSFM. Confirm the listing in GOVmotus before specification; these construction details come from the dated handbook.
