OSFM 8165 vent applications

OSFM category 8165 is the California BML bucket for ember- and flame-resistant vents. The listing is a model and an orientation, not a brand. ASTM E2886 covers gable-end, foundation, vertical-wall, and under-eave specimens. It excludes roof ridge and off-ridge field vents. Category 8160 is soffit covering. A dryer hood is not this bucket.

You are in the handbook on an 8165 row. The application column says eave, or gable, or soffit. That word is the product.

Why it matters

Embers enter at the hole you actually cut. A listed gable vent in an eave hole is the wrong specimen. A listed 8160 soffit panel with perforations is cladding, not a vent. See the vented fiber-cement finding.

Listing remains voluntary for most WUI products. Deschutes County accepts handbook products when they are shown on the drawings.

The paths

1. Read the application on the row. Examples on this site: Vulcan eave round 8165-2192:0500, BrandGuard soffit and undereave 8165-2232:0500, BrandGuard gable, Able Sheet Metal MGV soffit 8165-2363:0002. Confirm the live GOVmotus record.

2. Match orientation. ESL-1689 Table 1 is the worked split for BrandGuard. A continuous-soffit model is not a gable-end model.

3. Oregon. Mesh or manufactured vent. Underside eave under 12 feet is R327.3.2.1. Put the model on the sheet.

4. California. CWUIC 504.10.1 is listed or E2886. 504.10.2 is mesh on sloped-roof ridge and off-ridge vents.

What people mix up

  • Using 8160 as 8165.
  • One SKU for every hole on the house.
  • Treating 8165 as required in Oregon.
  • Putting a dryer on an 8165 schedule.

How to check

  1. List every opening. Gable, eave, soffit, foundation, ridge, dryer.
  2. For each 8165 product, copy the application word from the handbook or Table 1 onto the drawing.
  3. If the hole is a ridge, do not force an E2886 row.
  4. Confirm the listing ID, not the brand.

Limits

Questions

Is 8165 the same as 8160?

No. 8165 is ember- and flame-resistant vents, commonly tested to ASTM E2886. 8160 is soffit and under-eave covering. A listed soffit panel is not a listed vent.

Can one 8165 number cover gable, eave, and ridge?

Only if the listing names those applications. ESL-1689 Table 1 splits foundation, soffit, eave, gable-end, and dormer rows. ASTM E2886 excludes ridge and off-ridge field vents. Do not rotate a gable specimen onto the ridge.

Do I need 8165 in Oregon?

Listing is usually voluntary. Where R327 is adopted, the paths are 1/16 to 1/8 inch mesh or a vent designed to resist burning embers and flame. Deschutes accepts handbook products when they are shown on the drawings. Absence from 8165 is not an automatic ban.

Is a dryer hood an 8165 vent?

No. The 8165 rows on this site are building ventilation. Forced-air outlets follow a different rule. See dryer vents versus mesh.
