Firewise USA
NFPA community recognition program for neighbors who organize, plan, and reduce wildfire risk at the local level. It is not a product listing, not adopted building code, and not a Zone 0 specification.
Covers: Voluntary annual recognition of a geographic site that meets NFPA’s Firewise USA criteria and keeps In Good Standing status.
Does not cover: A product listing, a building permit, Oregon R327, California Zone 0 as a statewide lot rule, or an IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home certificate.
Firewise USA is an NFPA community recognition program. Neighbors in a geographic site organize, plan, and do annual risk-reduction work. NFPA administers it. The USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters co-sponsor it. It is not a product listing, not adopted code, and not a Zone 0 specification.
Why it matters
People search “Firewise approved vents” and expect a catalog. The program does not list vents. It recognizes sites. Mixing Firewise, IBHS, and R327 into one stamp is how drawings go wrong.
How the program works
NFPA’s program page states that Firewise USA provides a collaborative framework to help neighbors get organized, find direction, and take action to increase the ignition resistance of their homes and community and to reduce wildfire risks at the local level (Firewise USA).
A site that meets a set of voluntary criteria each year and keeps In Good Standing status may identify itself as a Firewise Site. Renewal is annual. NFPA’s “become a site” page names the usual steps: a resident board or committee, a wildfire risk assessment, a multi-year action plan, and a yearly investment of time or equivalent value tied to the number of homes, then an application through the Firewise portal. State liaisons approve. NFPA processes. Individual states can add requirements.
That is community work. It is not a lab method and not a listing ID.

1. Use Firewise for neighbors. Committee, assessment, plan, annual work, portal. See Firewise USA site recognition and NFPA’s become a site page.
2. Use code for the building. R327, CWUIC, or the local book. Recognition does not inspect rafter tails.
3. Use listing for the model. OSFM BML or an ICC-ES ESL. Firewise does not issue those IDs.
4. Use IBHS for the insurer checklist. Different program. See IBHS does not replace code.
5. Use the carrier for the California community credit. A site in good standing is a 10 CCR 2644.9 rating factor in California. It is not a published percent. See Firewise and premiums.
What people mix up
- Writing Firewise on a product as if it were listed.
- Treating a Firewise site as Zone 0 compliance for every lot.
- Treating Firewise as Oregon R327 adoption.
- Treating Firewise hours as a substitute for a test report.
- Calling this site “Firewise approved.” FireApproved does not approve products.
How to check
If someone claims the community is Firewise, look up the site on NFPA’s map and confirm In Good Standing for the current year. Then read the adopted code for the lot. Then read the drawings for the model numbers.
Limits
This page does not enroll a site. It does not list plants as a Firewise palette. Zone 0 is never a planting list. It does not replace defensible space rules from OSFM or CAL FIRE.

Is Firewise USA a product listing?
No. Firewise USA recognizes communities that meet voluntary annual criteria. It does not list vents, siding, or plants. Do not write a Firewise stamp on a product page.
Does Firewise USA replace adopted code?
No. NFPA describes a collaborative framework for neighbors. Oregon R327, where adopted, and California WUI rules are separate. IBHS Wildfire Prepared is a designation, not Firewise.
Is Firewise USA a Zone 0 specification?
No. Zone 0 is a 0–5 foot band used in defensible-space and home-hardening guidance. Firewise USA is a community recognition program. Do not treat site recognition as a planting list or a noncombustible-zone code.
If my HOA is Firewise, are my eaves done?
No. Community recognition does not inspect your rafter tails. Read the adopted code for the lot and the drawings.
