Texas WUI code status

Texas does not have a statewide IWUIC construction book. Local Government Code 214.212 adopts the International Residential Code as the municipal residential building code. 214.216 adopts the International Building Code for commercial buildings in a municipality. IWUIC is not those statutes.

You are looking at a lot in Texas and asking which book binds a new roof. The statewide path is ordinary IRC or IBC construction unless a city adopted a WUI overlay. This site does not invent that overlay.

Why it matters

Embers still reach a Hill Country eave. A missing statewide WUI book means you cannot spec “Texas IWUIC Class A” as a state minimum. You can spec a local ordinance if one exists, or an insurer checklist such as IBHS Wildfire Prepared. See the hardening ladder.

How it works

214.212 says the IRC, as it existed on 1 May 2012, is adopted as a municipal residential building code. Municipalities may adopt local amendments by ordinance after a public hearing. 214.216 does the same job for the IBC on commercial buildings. Neither section names IWUIC.

One opened local example is Austin. The city’s Wildland-Urban Interface Code page states Austin adopted the 2024 IWUIC with local amendments, effective 10 July 2025 for applications on or after that date (Ordinance 20250410-041). Earlier applications used an amended 2015 IWUIC. Austin publishes a local interactive map. The map starts review; official boundary, onsite proximity measurements, project type, and mixed-jurisdiction reach remain City determinations.

The paths

  1. Statewide IRC / IBC. Spec that book unless a local WUI overlay applies.
  2. Local IWUIC. Spec the ordinance the building official names. Austin’s 2024 overlay is one opened example.
  3. Harden anyway. IBHS is a designation, not adopted code.

What people mix up

  • Treating Austin’s WUIC as a statewide mandate.
  • Importing Oregon R327 or California CWUIC onto a Texas drawing.
  • Treating Austin’s interactive map as a Texas construction class.

How to check

  1. Ask the building official whether the city adopted IWUIC or another WUI overlay.
  2. Read 214.212 and 214.216.
  3. This site does not read your parcel.

Limits

Austin adopted the 2024 IWUIC with local proximity-zone amendments, effective 10 July 2025. The sourced Austin page now separates the official map, full/limited-purpose scope, local replacements, and unresolved project checks. That is Austin’s book, not Texas’s.

Does this site read my parcel?

No. Austin publishes a local WUI map. There is no statewide WUI construction map to link. Ask the building official.
