Florida WUI code status

Florida does not have a statewide IWUIC construction book. F.S. 553.73(7) tells the Florida Building Commission to update the Florida Building Code every three years from the International Building Code, International Fuel Gas Code, International Existing Building Code, International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, International Residential Code, and the National Electrical Code, plus energy. IWUIC is not on that list.

You are looking at a lot in Florida and asking which book binds a new roof. The statewide path is the Florida Building Code. Lightning-ignited wildfire exists in Florida. That is not a WUI construction overlay in 553.73.

Why it matters

Embers can still reach a Panhandle eave. A missing statewide WUI book means you cannot spec “Florida IWUIC Class A” as a state minimum. You can spec the Florida Building Code, a local technical amendment if one exists, or an insurer checklist such as IBHS Wildfire Prepared. See the hardening ladder.

How it works

553.73(6) deems the Florida Building Code adopted for use statewide without adoptions by local government. 553.73(7)(f) protects wind-resistance and water-intrusion provisions from being weakened. Those are the hazards the statute names. IWUIC Chapter 5 is not in that update list.

F.S. 633.202 is a separate path. The State Fire Marshal adopts the Florida Fire Prevention Code from NFPA 1 and NFPA 101. The Fire Marshal may not adopt a building code. That firesafety book is not IWUIC.

Local governments may adopt more stringent technical amendments to the Florida Building Code under 553.73(4), subject to process. 553.73(4)(b)3 says those additional requirements may not introduce a new subject not addressed in the Florida Building Code. Do not treat this page as a ruling on a local overlay we have not opened.

The paths

  1. Florida Building Code. Spec that book.
  2. Florida Fire Prevention Code. Spec that firesafety book where it applies. It is not IWUIC Chapter 5.
  3. Harden anyway. IBHS is a designation, not adopted code.

What people mix up

  • Treating a lightning-fire season as a WUI construction mandate.
  • Importing Oregon R327 or California CWUIC onto a Florida drawing.
  • Treating NFPA 1 as IWUIC Chapter 5.

How to check

  1. Ask the building official which edition of the Florida Building Code applies, and whether any local technical amendment names a WUI overlay.
  2. Read 553.73(7). If IWUIC is still absent, there is no statewide WUI construction book.
  3. This site does not read your parcel.

Limits

Questions

Does Florida require IWUIC construction on my lot today?

No. F.S. 553.73(7) updates the Florida Building Code from the IBC, IFGC, IEBC, IMC, IPC, IRC, NEC, and IECC. IWUIC is not on that list. Confirm with the building official.

What about the Florida Fire Prevention Code?

F.S. 633.202 directs the State Fire Marshal to adopt the Florida Fire Prevention Code from NFPA 1 and NFPA 101. That is a firesafety code, not IWUIC Chapter 5 construction.

Does this site read my parcel?

No. There is no statewide WUI construction map to link. Florida’s named construction hazards in 553.73 are wind resistance and water intrusion, not a WUI overlay.
