Home-hardening grants
Public home-hardening money in Oregon, as of 23 August 2026, is mostly granted to fire agencies, counties, cities, and nonprofits. It is not a statewide coupon for a Class A roof. OSFM’s listed current grant is a staffing round. ODF’s next Small Forestland Grant window should return July/August 2027. FEMA HMGP does not take a homeowner application.
You are holding a contractor quote for vents and a browser tab that says “wildfire grant.” The quote is a product and a labor number. The tab is probably an agency program. Match the applicant on the grant page to the name on your mailbox before you wait.
This page is dated on purpose. Grants close. Do not treat a program map as an open round.
Why it matters
Search results mix closed $18-million rounds, fire-season staffing, small-forestland fuels, and FEMA disaster mitigation into one “free roof” story. Waiting for a grant that you cannot apply for leaves bark against the wall. Treating an agency award as a listing leaves the eaves wrong. The hardening ladder is still the order of operations on the house you have.
How it works
Read the eligible applicant line. If it names local government, a fire agency, or a nonprofit, you are not the applicant. You might still receive work if that entity won and is running home assessments or fuels crews on private lots. Ask them. Do not invent a dollar-off.
Firewise USA recognition and a CWPP are often prerequisites or scoring factors for community grants. They are not the check.

1. Ask the fire district, not the internet coupon. OSFM’s CWRR story is projects, equipment, and staff for agencies and NGOs. The February 2023 CWPP investment was $2.7 million in 25 counties, including Deschutes. If your district ran home assessments or defensible-space crews with that money, they still might. Call them. The closed round is not your application portal.
2. If you own small forestland, calendar 2027. ODF defines a small forestland owner as an individual, group, or federally recognized tribe in Oregon that owns up to 160 acres west of the Cascade crest or 640 acres east of it. Multiple owners can sit in one project if each meets that cap. Requested funding is more than $10,000 and up to $300,000. At least 75 percent of costs must fund fuel-reduction treatment. That is landscape work. It is not R327.
3. If you are an HOA, read CWDG, not a roof SKU. CWDG is community-scale money to write or implement a CWPP. ODF describes $1 billion over four years nationally ($200 million per year) under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Eligible applicants include HOAs. Round 3 is closed. Confirm Round 4 on the Forest Service page before you staff a grant writer.
4. FEMA is after a declaration, through government. HMGP becomes available following a Presidentially declared disaster. FEMA’s page, last updated 10 April 2026, says homeowners and businesses are not eligible to apply directly. Oregon OEM repeats it: individual homeowners and business owners may not apply for HMA grants directly; eligible local governments may apply on their behalf. Applicants need a FEMA-approved Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan. Eligible work can include retrofitting buildings for wildfire. That still is not a walk-up window.
5. Do the $0 work anyway. Empty gutters. Pull combustible groundcover from the first five feet. See landscaping and the Oregon defensible-space checklist. A grant delay is not a reason to leave the ember path open.

How to check
- Open OSFM Investments for Oregon. Read Current Grants first. Then read whether the success-story round names you as the applicant.
- Open ODF Small Forestland Grant. Read the next application sentence and the acreage definition.
- Open ODF fire prevention / CWDG. Read who is eligible. HOA is on that list. A single lot is not.
- Open FEMA HMGP and Oregon OEM HMA. If the sentence says homeowners may not apply directly, stop filling a federal form.
- Ask the fire district which OSFM or CWPP project, if any, is still doing work on private lots this year.
- Re-verify this page. The date in the lede is the claim.
Limits
This page does not award money. It does not quote a contractor discount. Dollar figures above are the amounts printed on the state and federal pages opened 23 August 2026. They rot. FireApproved is not OSFM, ODF, OEM, or FEMA. California home-hardening programs are different books. ReOregon HARP is 2020 disaster reconstruction, closed to new applications, and is not this page.

Do I wait for a grant before I empty the five feet?
No. The home-hardening ladder still starts with debris and the first five feet. A closed grant round is not a reason to leave bark against the siding.
