Gates across fire apparatus access

Last verified 2026-08-23.

A locked gate is an obstruction of the fire apparatus road. Yamhill’s 2025 guide wants 20 feet unobstructed, one-person operation, and listed electric operators. Portland allows a 12-foot gate on one- or two-family dwellings and a 30-foot setback. OFC 506 lets the official require a key box. Knox is the product those districts name. It is not a statewide statute. Confirm with the AHJ.

You are looking at a keypad on a ranch gate that sits on the property line. The engine has to stop in the public road, open the gate, and not block the county lane. Setback and width are that problem. This is not a Zone 0 fence.

No g3-passed exhibit matches this object. SIT-100 names the site. It is not a gate detail. DET-022 is still a brief.

Why it matters

A gate that opens too slowly, or opens into the travel lane, is how the first engine waits in the road. Width without emergency operation still fails. A Knox key that is not in that district’s box still fails.

How it works

The fire apparatus road includes the gate that crosses it. The official wants a clear opening, a place to stack the engine off the public road, and a way in when nobody is home. Electric operators have listing paths (UL 325, ASTM F2200) in the Oregon guides opened here. A decorative farm gate with a center post is the usual miss on Lincoln’s form.

The paths

1. Measure the opening the engine uses. Center posts count. Lincoln says so. A 20-foot leaf with a 2-foot island is not 20 feet.

2. Put the gate where the engine can stack. Portland and California both use 30 feet from the intersecting road on the cases they write. Yamhill does not reprint that number in the gate list. Ask.

3. Emergency operation is not the keypad. Yamhill and Portland want a means the fire department can use. Marion County names Knox key switches or padlocks as examples under OFC 506. Order the box to that district’s key. A Bend box does not open for Redmond.

4. Listings are for the operator, not the ranch brand. UL 325 and ASTM F2200 appear in Yamhill, Portland, and Lincoln for electric or automatic gates. They are not an R327 covering path.

5. California is a different book. Title 14 § 1273.09 is State Minimum Fire Safe Regulations. It is not Oregon Fire Code. Do not put a 14-foot California gate on a Deschutes OFC drawing and call it done.

6. Fence wick is a sibling, not this gate. Fence as a wick. Fire apparatus access owns width and grade. Address signs own the number the engine is hunting.

What people mix up

  • One 20-foot gate for every lot.
  • A Knox box as a substitute for width.
  • A combination keypad as emergency operation.
  • A Zone 0 metal fence gate as the driveway gate.
  • California 14 CCR as Oregon Fire Code.
  • A center post as “still 20 feet.”

How to check

  1. Open the access guide the district publishes. Find gates. Find key boxes.
  2. Measure the clear opening. Look for a center post.
  3. Measure setback from the intersecting road.
  4. If the gate is electric, ask which listing and which fire-department open means they want.
  5. If they want Knox, order it to that agency on KnoxBox.com. Marion County’s page walks that order.
  6. Confirm. Event blogs are not OFC 506.

Limits

This page does not sell Knox hardware. It does not set Bend’s or Sisters’ gate standard. FireApproved is not the fire district. Keep the opening the width they named, and give them a way through it.

Questions

Is every gate 20 feet wide?

No. Yamhill’s 2025 guide and Lincoln County’s 2022 OFC form both start at 20 feet unobstructed, with 12 feet on a divided roadway in Yamhill. Portland’s 2021 fire-code guide allows 12 feet for gates serving one- or two-family dwellings, 12 feet on a divided roadway, and 14 feet when no turning movement is required within 30 feet of either side. California’s Title 14 section 1273.09 is a different book. It wants the gate two feet wider than the traffic lane, at least 14 feet horizontal, and 13 feet 6 inches vertical.

Does a Knox box replace the gate width?

No. Width and emergency operation are separate. Oregon Fire Code section 506, as Marion County Fire District

Can I padlock a manual gate?

Portland’s guide says a manual gate shall not be locked with a padlock or chain unless it can be opened with forcible-entry tools or a key box at the gate holds the key. Methods of locking are the fire code official’s call. Do not assume a combination keypad is enough.

Is a fence gate in Zone 0 the same object?

No. A combustible fence that hits the house is a wick. A gate across the driveway is fire-apparatus access. See fence as a wick.
