Address signs firefighters can find
Oregon fire-access guides reprint OFC 505.1. Numbers contrast with their background, sit where they are visible from the road fronting the property, and are at least 4 inches high with a 1/2-inch stroke. If the house cannot be seen from the public way, a monument or pole at the driveway is the usual extra. Redmond Fire & Rescue sells a 6-by-12-inch two-sided reflective street sign. That program is not the code section. Confirm with the AHJ.
You are standing at the county road at dusk. The house is 400 feet down a bend. The number on the garage wall is behind the juniper. The engine is hunting the post at the entrance. That post is the object.
No g3-passed exhibit matches this object. SIT-100 names an address sign on the site diagram. It is not a 505.1 lettering spec. Do not use it as the lead here.
Why it matters
A hard-to-read number is how the engine passes the driveway. Width and turnaround do not help if they never find the lot. Vegetation, a decorative font, and a house number that only faces the porch are the usual misses.
How it works
505.1 is premises identification. It is not R327. It is not the green RV plaque. Contrast and stroke width are how a headlight picks the number off sagebrush. A second sign at the street is how a private road that hides the building still gets an engine. District-made plaques are a way to buy that second sign. They do not rewrite the inch rule.

The paths
1. Put a contrasting 4-inch number where the road sees it. Yamhill, Portland, Lincoln, Redmond. Arabic numerals or letters in Portland’s reprint.
2. Add a street post when the building is not in view. Yamhill and Portland. Redmond wants that post readable from both directions.
3. Do not treat the Redmond 6-by-12 plaque as the code. It is a $25 district product for people in their fire-protection or ambulance area, mounted on a post, not designed for the wall. Replacement of their unreadable sign is no cost. Other districts have other shops.
4. Do not treat the Deschutes green RV sign as 505.1. Three inches on the unit is the RV FAQ. Houses in those same guides are 4 inches. ADU and shop is the dwelling-type split. This page is the number.
5. Keep vegetation off the face. Yamhill lists vegetation, vehicles, and other objects as obstructions. A perfect 4-inch digit behind a bitterbrush is not visible.
6. Access is a sibling. Fire apparatus access is width and grade. Gates are the locked opening. A perfect sign on a 8-foot locked gate still fails the engine.

- A decorative script font as 1/2-inch stroke.
- One sign at the garage as enough on a long private road.
- Address as an R327 covering inspection.
How to check
- Stand at the public road. Can you read the number without walking in?
- Open the district’s access guide. Find 505.1. Note 4 inches and 1/2-inch stroke.
- If the building is around a bend, look for a post at the entrance. Redmond wants both directions.
- If you are in Redmond’s district and want their plaque, use their request form. Do not order a Bend-keyed Knox and call it an address sign.
- For a Deschutes RV rental, read the RV FAQ as well as 505.1. Two objects.
- Confirm with the official who will inspect access.
Limits
This page does not assign addresses. The county address coordinator does that. It does not print Bend’s or Sisters’ plaque shop. FireApproved is not the fire district. Put a number the engine can read from the road they actually drive.

Is 4 inches the only legal height?
Yamhill’s 2025 guide and Portland’s 2021 fire-code guide both reprint OFC 505.1 as a 4-inch minimum with a 1/2-inch stroke. Yamhill recommends 6 inches. Redmond Fire & Rescue tells residents to use 4 inches and 0.5-inch stroke, then sells a 6-by-12-inch two-sided reflective sign for the street. The district sign is a program. It is not a rewrite of 505.1.
Does a number on the house skip the driveway sign?
Not if the building cannot be viewed from the public way. Yamhill and Portland both say a monument, pole, or other sign shall identify the structure on a private road in that case. Redmond says street signs need to be visible from either direction, and that a long access road may need more than one.
Is the green Deschutes RV sign the statewide marker?
No. Deschutes County’s RV-rental FAQ says the green reflective address sign at the driveway entrance is obtained from the fire department, and that numbers on the unit shall not be less than 3 inches. That FAQ is RV rental dwellings. It is not the OFC 505.1 4-inch building rule.
Do I need the sign before the house is finished?
Portland and Yamhill write 505.1 on new and existing buildings. Access and water during construction is a different OFC chapter in those same guides. Ask the official when they want the number up. Do not wait until landscaping hides the post.
