Fire-resistant fencing is about where the fence meets the house. IBHS Wildfire Prepared removes combustible fence, gate, post and retaining-wall material within five feet of the structure or replaces it with noncombustible material; CAL FIRE tells homeowners to replace combustible fencing or gates attached to the house with a noncombustible alternative for the first eight feet; Oregon's State Fire Marshal advises metal gates for fence sections within five feet. Voluntary program “replace with noncombustible material”

IBHS 0–5 foot fence and gate. The 2025 IBHS Base standard removes combustible fence, gate, post, and retaining-wall material within five feet or replaces it with noncombustible material.

What fences are fireproof?

None. The rules are about the transition: a noncombustible section, a metal panel, a metal gate or masonry, where the fence approaches the house, so a burning fence does not carry flame into the wall.

What are some non-flammable fence materials?

Metal panels and gates, masonry and other noncombustible materials, which is what IBHS asks for within five feet of the house and CAL FIRE within eight. Those lines apply to the section next to the house.

Does a metal gate make an entire fence safer?

It can interrupt a combustible fence where the fence approaches the house, but the panel, posts, attachments, nearby debris, and the rest of the first five feet remain separate facts. Review the complete transition.
