If the house has noncombustible siding, widely spaced foundation plantings of low growing shrubs or other fire resistant plants are acceptable. Ideally, remove all conifer trees from the 30-foot Intensive Zone. Heavier fuels, such as brush and coniferous trees, are very hazardous and produce a more intense fire than light, fast burning grassy fuels. Minnesota Firewise Handbook (2024): the DNR responds to over 1,000 wildfires each year and over 90% are caused by people; in 2021, partners responded to over 2,000. If access is poor, combustibles are close to the building, the house is surrounded by evergreens, or other flammability factors are present, firefighters may have to bypass the home. Defensible space extends up to 100 feet in diameter around your home or cabin.","asOf":"2026-08-25T00:00:00.000Z","object":{"kind":"guide","id":"the-resin-question-at-a-lake-cabin","title":"The resin question at a Minnesota lake cabin","url":"/guides/the-resin-question-at-a-lake-cabin/"},"source":{"title":"Minnesota Firewise Handbook","url":"https://files.dnr.state.mn.us/assistance/backyard/firewise/firewise-handbook.pdf","publisher":"Minnesota Department of Natural Resources","sourceType":"official","accessedOn":"2026-08-25T00:00:00.000Z","documentDate":"2024-01-01T00:00:00.000Z"}}],"local":[]},"placeFocusedGuides":[{"id":"the-resin-question-at-a-lake-cabin","title":"The resin question at a Minnesota lake cabin","url":"/guides/the-resin-question-at-a-lake-cabin/"}],"findings":[],"plants":{"grain":"state","total":406,"nativeDocumented":0,"invasiveOrNoxiousFlagged":92,"fireResistant":260,"keepAway":32,"conflicts":3,"page":"/grow/minnesota/"},"fireEvidencePublicationScope":{"answerGrain":"typed-regional-context","sourceCount":1}}
