Tall trees won’t cut it. The bird needs lots of space and favors edges of clearings, which is why people may notice large jack pine harvests in the northern Lower Peninsula. Jack pine is a fire-dependent species; cones need heat to open. Because we protect against wildfire to keep communities safe, the large-scale fires that historically created the habitat aren’t regularly happening. That leaves cutting and replanting. The DNR will plant 1 million to 1.5 million jack pines on 1,000 to 1,500 acres per year. Combined, DNR and the USDA Forest Service contract for harvest of about 2,000 to 3,000 acres per year. Most cuts are 300 acres or more. They will rarely nest in disturbed areas less than 80 acres. The planting pattern is the opposing wave, also the warbler weave.","asOf":"2026-08-25T00:00:00.000Z","object":{"kind":"guide","id":"what-kirtlands-warbler-country-teaches","title":"What Kirtland's warbler country teaches a cabin","url":"/guides/what-kirtlands-warbler-country-teaches/"},"source":{"title":"The Kirtland’s warbler is many things","url":"https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/MIDNR/bulletins/35c92c5","publisher":"Michigan Department of Natural Resources","sourceType":"official","accessedOn":"2026-08-25T00:00:00.000Z","documentDate":"2023-05-25T00:00:00.000Z"}}],"local":[]},"placeFocusedGuides":[{"id":"what-kirtlands-warbler-country-teaches","title":"What Kirtland's warbler country teaches a cabin","url":"/guides/what-kirtlands-warbler-country-teaches/"}],"findings":[],"plants":{"grain":"state","total":573,"nativeDocumented":1,"invasiveOrNoxiousFlagged":149,"fireResistant":369,"keepAway":44,"conflicts":13,"page":"/grow/michigan/"},"fireEvidencePublicationScope":{"answerGrain":"typed-state-source","sourceCount":1}}
