Over 90 consecutive days of record-breaking high temperatures and drought. By mid-October many small wildfires started and spread out of control. Statewide these fires burned over 220,000 acres, burned 1,000 homes, left 2,500 people homeless and 16 people dead. Damages totaled over 11 million dollars at that time. In the last 75 years firefighting equipment, communication, training and fire prevention efforts have improved considerably, yet humans still cause over 90% of wildfires in Maine. Gravel or another noncombustible groundcover is important; mowed irrigated grass can also be acceptable. Landscaping should be well-spaced, pruned, watered, and not in direct contact with the structure. Hardwood (broad-leafed) trees and shrubs are preferable to softwood (needle-leafed) trees and shrubs. Softwoods have more resin in their bark and less moisture in their leaves, and are more likely to ignite than live hardwoods. Zone 2 (5–30 feet): hardwoods preferable; remove the lower 1/3 of branches from softwoods and reduce ladder fuels. Zone 3 (30–100 feet): thin; if possible retain more hardwoods than softwoods.
