The warm, wet climate and long growing season promote explosive weed growth. Even desirable plants can quickly outgrow their appointed spaces. Filling the landscape with gravel, boulders, and pavement still leaves periodic maintenance: wind, rain, wildlife, and mowing carry dirt and weed seeds. Zone 4: thin the natural area; remove highly flammable vegetation such as pine trees, wax myrtles, ornamental grasses; remove brown leaf litter and pine straw needles. Take out ladder fuels. Fuel breaks: driveways, gravel walkways, lawns. Prune trees up to 6 to 10 feet from the ground. Leave a minimum of 30 feet around the house to accommodate fire equipment.
